Pelkosenniemi

Pelkosenniemi [ pɛlkɔsɛn iɛmi ː ] is a municipality in the Finnish part of Lapland. It is located about 140 km northeast of the town of Rovaniemi.

To the municipality next to the main town Pelkosenniemi include the widely scattered settlements Arvonen, Kairala, Kiemunkivaara, Luiro, Pyhajarvi, Saunavaara and Suvanto.

The 540 m high Fjell Pyhätunturi is located on the boundary of Pelkosenniemi, as is the set on its foot Pyhä ski resort. On the western slope of the mountain is dug by amethysts.

During the Winter War Pelkosenniemi was in December 1939 the scene of fierce battles between the Finnish and the Red Army; to the fallen of both sides remember monuments.
