Pellene

Pellene (Greek Πελλήνη ( f sg ) ) is an ancient Greek city on the Peloponnese in the landscape Achaia, near the Gulf of Corinth on the border of Argolis. The city-state bordered to the southeast by the River Sythas separated at Sicyon, which was about 35 km north-west of Corinth.

The remains of the ancient city Pellene located near the Greek city Xilokastro. In Pellene stood a colossal statue of Athena the Greek artist Phidias.

History

Around the middle of the 7th century BC was Orthagoras, an aristocrat from the neighboring city of Sicyon in clashes with Pellene. But it was his successor Cleisthenes to end the dispute victorious succeeded.
