Pellet (ornithology)

As Gewölle or Speiballen mainly of owls birds and birds of prey, but also of many other species of birds choked out indigestible food remains ( bones, feathers ) are referred to.

Included in Gewölle are sorted according to species fish bones, skeleton parts, parts of snail shells, shells and Crab Shell and Chitinteile of insects. In birds of prey and owls these are usually shrouded in mammalian hair or feathers.

The zoologists are investigating the components of the Gewölle important notes on the prey that were eaten by the respective birds. Studies of Gewölle give information about the fauna in the hunting ground of the animals.

The following bird groups or species produce Gewölle (selection): Owls, Wryneck, cormorants, raptors, herons, gulls, sailors birds, kingfishers, shrikes, cuckoos, some thrushes, ravens and crows, wading birds, corncrake, bee-eaters, Kagu and storks.
