The Pembina River is a right tributary of the Athabasca River in central Alberta ( Canada).

The name Pembina [ pɛmbɪnə ] was derived from the Canadian- French name for the shrub Viburnum trilobum. The river again gave its name to the Pembina oil field, an oil- and gas -producing region around Drayton Valley. The Environmental Institute Pembina Institute has also derived its name from the river.

Course of the river

The Pembina River rises south of Cadomin at Pembina Forks in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. It flows in an easterly direction and flows after 547 km in the Athabasca River 64 km west of the city Athabasca. Its catchment area covers an area of ​​12,900 km ².

Communities along the river of the Pembina River are Westlock, Sangudo, Entwistle, Evansburg.

The Pembina River Provincial Park is located along the gorges of the river between Evansburg and Entwistle. Another protected area along the river is the Pembina River Natural Area, 20 km north-east of Cherhill located in the Aspen Parkland.
