Penampang

Federal State

Penampang is a small town in the Malaysian state of Sabah. The same to the County (District Penampang ) belonging town adjacent to Kota Kinabalu and has therefore almost the status of a suburb. It is part of the region West Coast Division to which the districts of Kota Kinabalu, Ranau, Kota Belud, Tuaran, Penampang, Putatan and Papar belong.

Origin of the name

The name Penampang (large rock) comes from the language of the Kadazan and points to the huge boulders that were found long ago in the vicinity of the place.

Culture

Penampang is often considered a stronghold of the Kadazan in Sabah and the center of its political and cultural development. The Assembly Hall of the Kadazan - Dusun Cultural Association ( KDCA ) is the site of many traditional festivals of the Kadazan, including the annual Kaamatan ( Harvest Festival ) as the most important cultural event.

In Penampang, the Monsopiad Cultural Village is located. Monsopiad was the name of a warrior who was well known that he struck off the head of his enemies, and the skull on his doorstep strung to warn his enemies.
