Penlee House

Penlee House is a museum and art gallery in the village of Penzance in Cornwall, and is currently managed by the municipal council of the town and the district government of Cornwall. The Victorian building, the ground floor the gallery with its changing exhibitions and in the remaining rooms houses the museum is surrounded by the Penlee Memorial Park.

Penlee House was built in 1865 for the wealthy merchant John Richards Branwell. The house is built in the Italian style, and probably the work of the architect John Matthews. The park surrounding Penlee House has been widely applied with greenery and fountains and equipped at the end of the park to Trewithen Road with a garden shed. Penlee House contained on the ground floor was originally a dining room, a breakfast room and a living room, plus a kitchen with pantry and maid's room. The first floor is reached from the hall via a grand staircase and a servants' staircase. There were three large bedrooms, including a separate bedroom for Branwell and his wife. The bedrooms were associated with a wardrobe and a large bathroom. In addition, there were four other small bedrooms for family members and service personnel.

1946 the municipality bought Penzance the house together with the park as a memorial for the dead of World War II and opened in 1949, formally Penzance District Museum. 1974 was the ownership of the museum on the Penwith District Council and managed since 1985, the municipal council the property. In the 1990s, the government undertook a major overhaul of the building to provide for adequate and contemporary accommodation for the famous collection of paintings available.

Penlee House houses many paintings by artists of the Newlyn School such as Walter Langley, Stanhope Forbes, Norman Garstin, Lamorna Birch, Thomas Cooper Gotch, Percy Robert Craft, Edwin Harris and Ralph Todd. The most famous painting of the exhibition is The Rain It Every Day by Norman Garstin Raineth, the long years in Wellington Terrace, a large estate in Penzance, lived.
