Penobscot County, Maine
Penobscot County is a county located in the state of Maine in the United States. The the county seat ( county seat ) is located in Bangor.
History
The County was formed on February 15, 1816 from parts of Hancock County. It was named for the Penobscot River, the longest river in Maine, which flows through the county.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has an area of 9210 square kilometers. Of these, 415 square kilometers of water surface; which corresponds to a share of 4.51 percent of the total. The county is bordered clockwise to the counties: Aroostook County, Washington County, Hancock County, Waldo County, Somerset County and Piscataquis County.

According to the census of 2000, there were 144 919 people in the county. There were 58 096 households and 3,782 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.60 % White, 0.49 % African American, 1.00 % Native American, 0.70 % Asian, 0.03 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 0.23 % from other races groups; 0.96% were descended from two or more races. 0.61 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 58 096 households out of which 30.10 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.50 % were married couples living together, 9.90% had a female householder with no husband. 34.90 % were non-families. 26.70 % of all households and 10.00 % had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.88.
Based on the county the population was spread out with 22.80 % under the age of 18, 11.30 % from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44 years, 23.80% between 45 and 64 years and 13.10% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 95.30 males, 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.30 males.
The median income for a household was $ 34,274, and the median income for a family was $ 42,206. Males have a median income of $ 32,824, women $ 23,346. The per capita income was $ 17,801. 13.70% of the population and 9.70% of families are below the poverty line. 15.00 % of those under age 18 and 11.10% were 65 years or older.
