Pensacola Ice Flyers

The Pensacola Ice Flyers are an American ice hockey team from Pensacola, Florida. The team plays since 2009 in the Southern Professional Hockey League.

History

The team was founded in 2009 as a franchise of the Southern Professional Hockey League. In Pensacola, they filled the gap that had left the Pensacola Ice Pilots, who until 2008 played in the ECHL from 1996 in the city. The name was chosen as a reference to the location near Pensacola Naval Air Station Pensacola, and the fact that team owner Tim Kerr had played for eleven years for the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League.

In its inaugural season, the Pensacola Ice Flyers occupied in the 2009/10 season in fifth place after the regular season and went straight into the playoffs for the President 's Cup. In the playoffs, they lost in the first round to the eventual champions Huntsville Havoc with 1:2 wins in the best-of -three series. The decision in favor of Huntsville fell in game three in extra time.

Coach

In its inaugural season, the Canadian Todd Gordon was both head coach, and general manager of the team. Previously, he was himself already been 2001-2004 head coach of the Pensacola Ice Pilots of the ECHL in.
