Pentyl

A pentyl group in the chemical is a hydrocarbon radical having five carbon atoms and having the empirical formula of C5H11 as a substituent in organic molecules. The name comes from the Greek penta five and the suffix -yl. Since there are different ways of branching, one obtains a series of eight isomeric pentyl radicals (see pentanol ).

The isomeric pentyl wear historically trivial names. Amyl as is for example the n-pentyl radical; n- pentyl alcohol is therefore also known under a common name amyl alcohol.
