People's Economic Council

The National Economy ( VWR) in the GDR was a central organ of the Council of Ministers of the GDR.

It was formed in July 1961 as a spin- industry Department and the Department for material supply from the State Planning Commission. Purpose of the Council should be an independent " central organ of state " for the management of the central and local industry as well as for the " regulation of the fundamental questions of craft and service companies ."

As a central body for the planning and management of industrial VWR developed on the basis of the decisions of the Ministerial Council, the perspective plan, orientation indicators and the guidelines of the State Planning Commission the annual plan for the industry. It was the task of VWR to implement the objectives set by the SED Central Committee and the government principles of economic policy through its industrial departments, the VVB and the economic councils of the districts.

The individual industry divisions of VWR were fully responsible for the preparation and the accounting of the annual plan of their economic sector and initiated their assigned VVB, scientific institutes and design offices in compliance with the responsibility and independence of VVB on. The VWR had a right to give instructions about the economic agent instances and district economic councils. For the first director of VWR Alfred Neumann was appointed.

It turned out in the course of development as inappropriate to conduct the growing industry of a centralized body such as the VWR out. Therefore, the Council of Ministers decided on 22 December 1965 VWR dissolve again. As a result of resolution 1965, a number of industrial ministries were created or re-established.
