People's Electoral Movement (Aruba)

The choice of movement of the people ( Pap Movimiento Electoral di Pueblo, short MEP) is a social democratic political party, founded in 1971 in Aruba. She is a member of the Socialist International.

The party was founded in 1971 by Gilberto François " Betico " Croes along with former party members of the AVP / UNA - PIA -PRO founded with the goal of a separate state for Aruba. The name of the party in the Creole language Papiamentu the island is similar to the name of the left-wing party, founded in 1967 Movimiento Electoral del Pueblo in neighboring Venezuela. In 1975, she became the largest political party in Aruba. 1977, a referendum was initiated, in which 57% pleading for a separate status of the island, which was achieved in 1986. In the elections of 1985, however, gained not the MIP, but the Christian Democratic AVP in the majority. 1985 Croes suffered a car accident and died in 1986. After the 2009 elections, the MEP lost its majority in parliament and has been in opposition.
