People's Power Party (Thailand)

The Party of People's Power (Thai: พรรค พลัง ประชาชน, Phak Phalang Prachachon, PPP, pronunciation: [ p ʰ p ʰ ák A.LANG prà.ʨ ʰ a ː ʨ ʰ on. ] ) Was a party in Thailand. Its leader was Somchai Wongsawat last. The PPP was established in August 2007 and was regarded as the successor of the Thai Rak Thai party of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and multi-billionaire, who was overthrown in 2006 by a military coup.

The work carried out in Thailand 23 December 2007 parliamentary elections, the PPP won the majority of seats and had to be enabling good outlook with Samak as prime minister a coalition government. On 28 January 2008 Samak Sundaravej was elected in Parliament, the new prime minister and appointed on the same day. He based his government on a coalition between the PPP and five other smaller parties.

As of May 2008, the opposition protests against the PPP is reinforced. Supporters of the People's Alliance for Democracy ( PAD ) occupied the parliament building and accused Samak of corruption. In September of Samak was eventually removed from office as Prime Minister, as he had injured with a second job as a TV chef by the constitution. Even under Samak's successor, Somchai Wongsawat, Thaksin Shinawatra a brother in law, the PPP was further target of protests, the increasingly paralyzed public life in Bangkok. End of November 2008 the PAD supporters blocked the airports in the Thai capital.

The party was banned on 2 December 2008 by the Thai Constitutional Court. She was accused of electoral fraud. The leading members of the PPP was banned for the next five years the political activity. Somchai Wongsawat then declared his resignation, but announced that the PPP wanted to reincorporate under a different name and set the Prime Minister again.

Then set up 80 PPP MPs who were not affected by the five-year operating ban within the same month, the Pheu Thai Party ( Phak Thai Phuea ) and chose first Yongyuth Wichaidit party chairman. Pracha Promnok, the head of the Pheu Paendin Party, has been named the top candidate for the Prime Minister in Parliament election, but was defeated Abhisit.
