People's Rally for Progress

Rassemblement Populaire pour le Progres (RPP, German " People's Assembly for progress" ) is the dominant political party in Djibouti.

It is officially socially oriented democratic.

History

The party was founded in 1979 by President Hassan Gouled Aptidon in Dikhil after he dissolved the previous party LPAI. She represented mainly the ethnic group of Issa. From 1981, she was the only legal Unity Party until 1992, a new constitution was introduced multi-party democracy. 1991-1994 led the Afar rebel group FRUD an armed struggle against the domination of the RPP, after which they cooperated extensively with the government.

The RPP remained the dominant party after the reintroduction of a multiparty system. In the parliamentary elections in Djibouti in 2003, run by their alliance Union pour la Majorité Présidentielle won (Union for the presidential majority ) with the former rebel group FRUD and two smaller parties 62.7 % of the vote and all 65 seats in the National Assembly, while the opposition coalition Union pour l' alternance Démocratique with 37.3 % won no seat. In the presidential elections in 2005, the reigning RPP President Ismail Omar Guelleh almost 100 % of the votes received unopposed at 71.7 % turnout. In the last parliamentary elections in 2008, which were boycotted by the opposition, in turn, fell all the seats to the UMP.
