Formation

The song was the first piece of the band for which they pre-programmed parts of the music in order to shorten the recording time in the studio. This preparatory work took place in London. Downside was that the conditions for pre-production which corresponded not in a recording studio, which is why it seemed that the band had to start all over again, if someone had stumbled by accident via a power cable. The studio recordings took place in January 1984 in the Hansa studios in Berlin under the baton of Gareth Jones instead. The band had rented two studios, one for the vocal recordings. The only part of the music, which was not sampled, was the singing. The fragments of speech used in the song had added singer David Gahan using a walkman during a flight.

Originally no further release was planned, but the band commissioned in April 1984 Adrian Sherwood with a remix. The aim was to publish a tanzbarere version. In the U.S. the song on May 16, 1984, the Maxi appeared on 11 July 1984.

The music video for the title was directed by Clive Richardson. It was filmed on the HMS Belfast, a abgemusterten cruiser of the Royal Navy, which is a museum ship on the Thames near the Tower Bridge. Some of the recordings took place in the ship's interior and in the engine room, so that Richardson wanted to represent the pounding electronic sound of the song.
