Pepe Habichuela

Pepe Habichuela (* 1944 in Granada, José Antonio Carmona ) is a Spanish flamenco guitarist who is known as one of the great flamenco master and one of the finest contemporary guitarists of Spain.

Habichuela belongs to a dynasty of flamenco gypsies that began with his grandfather Habichuela el Viejo ( Old Bean ) and his father José Carmona and his brothers Juan Habichuela ( born 1933), Carlos and Luis continued. In 1964 Habichuela to Madrid, where he was involved in flamenco performances with artists such as Juanito Valderrama, Camarón de la Isla, Paco de Lucía, Manolo Sanlúcar and Enrique Morente. His tribute album to the singer Antonio Chacón was in 1975 awarded the national record award in Spain. His album A Mandeli, a tribute to his grandfather, who has in the flamenco scene cult status.

Although habichuela considered as representative of flamenco puro, in contrast to his son, José Miguel Carmona Niño and his nephew Juan José Carmona Amaya El Camborio and Antonio Carmona Amaya, which form the Nuevo flamenco group Ketama. Pepe Habichuela has, however, also deals with crossover, especially with Indian Bollywood music. He has also occurred with jazz musicians like Don Cherry and repeatedly since 2010 with Dave Holland.
