Peperino

Peperino, also peperine, Peperit, pepper stone ( antique: Albanus lapis ), is an ashen-gray or greenish- gray basaltic tuff with eingemengten angular fragments of dolerite, leucite, augite, mica, etc. It is mainly found on the Alban hills near Rome. It was used in ancient times as a building material. Nowadays, it is mainly used for building blocks or base plates and the stone sculpture.

In addition to the gray type ( Peperino Grigio ), there is a reddish type ( Peperino Rosso ). These natural stones are not suitable for polishing, but frost- resistant.
