Pepetela
Pepetela - Artur Carlos Maurício Pestana actually dos Santos - (* October 19, 1941 in Benguela, Angola ) is an Angolan writer, politician and freedom fighter of Portuguese descent. The artist name Pepetela means to Umbundu " eyelash", inspired by his last name Pestana, the Portuguese word for batting.
Life and work
Pepetela studied from 1958 Engineering and Sociology at the University of Lisbon and Algiers. In Algiers, he teamed up with Henrique Abranches the Centro de Estudos Angolanos (Centre for Angola studies). He fought for the independence of Angola and joined the guerrillas in 1969 in the province of Cabinda. After independence, Angola was Pepetela Vice Minister of Education and since 1982 professor of sociology at the Faculty of Architecture and Art at the State Universidade Agostinho Neto in Luanda. As part of the Berlin Artists Program of the DAAD, he has lived in Berlin 1991/92, where the novel A Geração is because Utopia emerged. In 1997 he received the Prémio Camões, the most prestigious literary prize of the Portuguese -speaking world.
