Pêra Rocha

The Rocha Pear (Portuguese ' Rocha do Oeste " ) is a species of pear (Pyrus communis), which is indigenous to Portugal. It was first mentioned in 1836 in the municipality of Sintra and is cultivated with steeply rising trend in the Oeste region.

Fruit

The fruit is characterized by an average size of 55 to 75 mm and oval shape. The shell is soft and green to yellowish with small dots. The flesh is firm, juicy and sweet.

Economic Importance

It is among the ten varieties of pears with the largest acreage in the EU and 2004 were 13,520 t Rocha pears from Oeste in countries such as Britain, Brazil, France, Ireland, Russia, Poland, the Netherlands, Canada and Spain exported.

For the name of agricultural products Pera Rocha do Oeste was declared in 2003 to the protected designation of origin within the EU.
