Peradeniya ( singhales. pe ra ː ˌ deniə ) is a small town near the city of Kandy in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. The situated on a peninsula in the river Mahaweli botanical garden called, Royal Botanical Garden of Peradeniya is one of the most beautiful in Asia and annually attracts about 1.2 million visitors. In addition, Peradeniya is well known for the University of Peradeniya, the second oldest and largest with about 8000 students university of the country.

Botanical garden

In the Botanical Garden of Peradeniya, you can find many tropical and subtropical plants. Among others there is to meet at one of the world's biggest birch figs. The plants range from Chilean tree candles ( Maytenus boaria ) about Mexican agave towards Australian, tall-growing trees. Due to the more temperate climate in the region Kandy Orchids are, however, also to be found there under glass.
