Perdiccas III of Macedon

Perdiccas III. was King of Macedon from 365 BC to 359 BC in the footsteps of his brother Alexander II He was the second son of Amyntas III. and Eurydice.

In the throne, he was still a minor, so that Ptolemy of Aloros, who was responsible for his brother's death, the regency took over. As Pausanias, another contender took to the throne, the power over large parts of Macedonia, they asked the Athenians for help. This sent the commander Iphicrates, on whose support they could get rid of Pausanias. After a reign of three years, Perdiccas, Ptolemy put to death by Aloros and took over the government.

In the following years there were disputes with Athens to Amphipolis. Perdiccas is to have no one in the government except philosophers and geographers. Plato sent him Euphraios of Oreos as a consultant with a letter of recommendation, the so-called fifth letter of Plato.

Perdiccas fell in a battle against the Illyrian king Bardylis, and was succeeded by his son Amyntas IV Since this was only three years old took over Perdiccas younger brother Philip II the government.
