Pere Riba

Pere Riba Madrid ( born April 7, 1988 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish tennis player.

Life and career

To 2006: Junior career and first experiences as a professional

Pere Riba began at the age of six years, to play tennis. His first major success was winning the Junior Davis Cup with Spain in October 2004. Already this year he qualified at the age of 16 years for Future Tournaments in men's area and win there games. In May 2005, he reached his first Futures final.

2007-2009: ATP debut and success on the Challenger Tour

It was not until June 2007 that he was able to win a Futures tournament for the first time. He also reached from April to August 2007, five more Future Finals, and thus attaining in the top 400 of the world tennis rankings. In July 2007, Riba has qualified in Umag for the first time for an ATP tournament, and was able to Luka Belić equal to win his first ATP match before losing to former world number one Carlos Moyá from Spain. The rest of the year he spent in Challenger tournaments, but never arrived there on the quarter -finals.

This changed in the following year, when he reached the final in Medjugorje in July 2008 and two months later in Sevilla won his first Challenger title. In addition, Riba took this year at the French Open for the first time in the qualifying for a Grand Slam tournament, but separated already in the first round. Because of his success on the Challenger Tour and two Futures titles at the beginning of the year rose Riba 2008 to No. 155 in the world rankings.

In 2009, Riba failed to qualify for one of the Grand Slam tournaments, but he failed to qualify for the ATP tournaments in Hamburg and Bucharest and each reach the second round. He defeated Evgeny Korolev in Hamburg for the first time a player from the top 100 in the world rankings. Other successes this year were defending the title at the Challenger tournament in Seville and Challenger finals in Tangier, Braşov and Florianópolis.

2010-2011: Grand Slam debut and establishment in the top 100

Since he was now climbed to No. 121 in the world rankings, Riba was directly qualified at the ATP tournament in Santiago de Chile, and reached there the second round. After his third Challenger title in Barletta Pere Riba was first performed in April 2010 in the top 100 in the world rankings. He was after Rafael Nadal is the second youngest Spaniard to have managed. Through his world ranking Riba was directly qualified for the main draw at the French Open in 2010, and defeated in his first Grand Slam match the Frenchman Marc Gicquel. In the second round he was then, however, inferior to his compatriot Juan Carlos Ferrero after two fought first records ultimately in four sets. In doubles, he even reached the quarterfinals at the side of Marc López. In June 2010, Riba won in Bytom his fourth Challenger title, but different then at Wimbledon in the first round. A month later he was like already qualify for the main draw of the German Open in Hamburg in the previous year, and moved to two three-set wins over Paul -Henri Mathieu and Albert Montanes first time in the third round of an ATP tournament. Even if he lost there in three sets against Potito Starace, he achieved this success with number 73 his hitherto best world ranking. In the rest of the season he could win no further ATP match more; at the U.S. Open, he retired in the first round in five sets against qualifier Adrian Mannarino from. In September 2010, he lost in the Challeger tournaments of Seville and Banja Luka each in the final, before he could win at the season final in Cancun against Carlos Berlocq his third title of the season in November 2010.

In January 2011, Pere Riba could achieve in his Australian Open debut with a win over Carsten Ball for the second time the second round of a Grand Slam tournament after Erstrundenniederlagen in Doha and Auckland. There, however, he had no chance against the set at position 11 Jürgen Melzer. After several Erstrundenniederlagen Riba reached in April 2011 at the ATP tournament in Casablanca the quarter-finals, where he had to admit the eventual tournament winner Pablo Andújar beaten. At the Masters Series in Monte Carlo and Madrid Pere Riba came each as a qualifier in the second round and defeated while the Top 50 Starace Potito player and Kei Nishikori. Also at the French Open, he was able to reach the second round just like last year with a victory over Ivan Dodig, where he was the set at position 29 Janko Tipsarevic clearly inferior. At Wimbledon Riba lost already in the first round against Robin Haase. In August 2011, Pere Riba reached after a second-round defeat at the ATP Tournament Kitzbühel at the Challenger tournament in San Sebastián the final, but it lost to Albert Ramos.
