Pere Ubu

Pere Ubu is a band from Cleveland, Ohio. Its name comes from Pere Ubu (father Ubu ), the protagonist of Ubu Roi (German: King Ubu ), a play by Alfred Jarry.

History

In 1974, David Thomas, the band Rocket From The Tombs. After creative differences between the members of the band broke up in 1975. Thomas and Peter Laughner founded Pere Ubu, while the other members of Rocket From The Tombs were later known as the Dead Boys. Pere Ubu grew by more members and participated already in September 1975 their first single, 30 Seconds Over Tokyo on. Beginning of 1976, the single Final Solution. In the absence of his own compositions the band in live performance initially played a lot of cover versions, including songs from the MC5, The Stooges and The Velvet Underground. The single releases followed by performances at Max 's Kansas City club in New York and a few clubs in Cleveland. After some changes in the band, it was the middle of 1976 to the release of the third single Street Waves.

This single was also the. Cliff Burnstein, an A & R man from the record company Mercury Records, called attention to the band However Burnstein not kept his company for the appropriate label, however, assured in an interview with Thomas, the band his support. Two weeks later showed interest in Chrysalis Records Pere Ubu. This pressured Burnstein created specifically for the band's label Blank Records, which was then operated as a sub- label of Mercury. Then in February 1978 the first album The Modern Dance. After a tour of the USA and Europe appeared in the same year the album Dub Housing. In the following year, the band toured in Europe together with Nico and The Red Crayola. After 1979 the third album New Picnic Time was released, and the band in San Diego had a performance in front of only five listeners, guitarist Tom Herman the band and was replaced by Mayo Thompson of The Red Crayola. At bottom, The Red Crayola more Thompsons project with constantly changing members so that the next release was completely involved in the Pere Ubu, the album was Soldier Talk under the band name The Red Crayola.

Pere Ubu released two more albums that were praised by critics. However, within the band there has been growing tension. David Thomas materialized 1982-1987 to a total of six albums, which meant all a continuation of the Ubu sounds. Because many former Pere Ubu - members were involved in the changing solo projects by Thomas. The band members Scott Krauss and Tony Maimone founded the new band called Home & Garden. Pere Ubu himself seemed resolved without someone had announced.

With the album The Tenement Year, the band woke up again in 1987. For the next album Cloudlands you worked with Stephen Hague as a producer. Its experience with the Pet Shop Boys and New Order bestowed the catchiest and poppigsten songs of the band. It was followed by further studio and live albums, but also much from earlier eras of the band was re-released.

The one constant of the band's history remains to this day David Thomas. Other members left the band to return to later. Alan Greenblatt, for example, had only a short spell. Inconsistent publishing practice of the band appears. Appeared the first album still under the care of the Mercury label, they changed for the second too Chrysalis. Subsequently, the contractual obligation was followed by Rough Trade Records, which lasted the longest, to then sign back in Fontana. There were also positions with other companies. The current label of the band is Glitterhouse.

Success in the charts could not reach the band. Nevertheless, their publications always had a major impact.

Music

Classify the music of Pere Ubu in a style, is almost impossible. On the official website of the band, she describes herself simply as a rock band. In its early days, the band against the background of the punk movement was categorized as a punk band, and later as a representative of the New Wave.

The difficulty of categorization could be explained by the fact that the band greatly absorbed many influences. But that alone is not sufficient. The manner in dealing with the structures, construction and arrangement of the songs also generated confusion. A style means the band is, for example, the use of an analog synthesizer, which apparently follows the logic, to submit to everything, except the will of the band. The result is an intentional disturbing / destroying the songs on the basis of an apparent Chaotik. Furthermore, the band compositions regarded as a puzzle that can be put together always different because each part fits on the other. In order for the dissolution of conventional song structures is a key aspect in the music of Pere Ubu. The production of organized chaos is supported by the peculiar, very emotional and therefore less disciplined style of singing and the high, but impressive voice of David Thomas. Within a song he is able to switch from aggression to piteous wail, punctuated by wobbling Glucksern. All this moves in all the ways they have to offer rock and pop. An assault on improvisational structures, such as the Jazz has to offer him, not take place.

When Alan Bangs was allowed to take the end of the 70s a second radio show on BFBS in addition to the established Night Flight, in the " other" music should be played, he named it in the absence of a truly striking category after the first album by Pere Ubu The Modern Dance.

However, if a categorization of music is not possible, you can see the band assign musical eras in which there have been similar, the one the psychedelic phase of the garage rock of the 1960s and the transition to the progressive rock of the 1970s, and also the time of punk and the resulting experimental bands of the avant-garde. So the band works as a link of The Velvet Underground, early Pink Floyd, The Fugs and The Red Crayola over fist, Soft Machine and Captain Beefheart to Brian Eno and This Heat. "30 Seconds Over Tokyo " was recorded in the legendary list Wire The Wire 's " 100 Records That Set The World On Fire (While No One Was Listening ) ".
