Performance Based Navigation

Performance Based Navigation (PBN, literally " performance-based navigation ") is a technology to reduce emissions and increase the efficiency of the air traffic in aviation. It will also be the basis for the development of future ATM systems in the context of SESAR and NextGen (USA). ICAO has here under the title PBN uniform and globally applicable guidelines for the use of RNAV ( Area Navigation ) and RNP ( Required Navigation Performance) created. Primarily it comes from the ground-based navigation (VOR, NDB, ILS) to get away and increasingly to rely on the use of satellite navigation. The main advantages of PBN procedures are on the one hand in lower fuel consumption due to shorter routes and thus to a reduction of emissions, and also in the possibility of a more flexible design options on arrival and departure procedures, specifically inhabited areas to fly around (keyword " Curved Approach" ) and thus make a significant contribution to aircraft noise relief.
