Perikaryon

Soma as shorthand to Zytosoma (from Greek κύτος kytos " cavity " and σῶμα soma " body " ) refers to the body of a cell minus their extensions, the core and occasionally other organelles. In the soma of the main part of the metabolism taking place, which is why it is often considered isolated. The soma of nerve cells (neurons) is also referred to as the perikaryon.
