Periodontal scaler

A scaler is a hand tool used in the prophylactic ( preventive ) Dentistry and serves primarily the removal of supragingival calculus (above the gum line situated tartar ). However, it can be generally also worked to eliminate other gums irritating bumps: for example, fixing cement residues protruding filling edges, foreign matter.

The tips ( workers ) of scalers can be designed differently, but are sharp in all cases.

Frontzahnscaler are mostly tick - or chisel-shaped. Seitenzahnscaler are often sickle-shaped and can also be designed differently for the right and left side or the upper or lower jaw depending on the make.

In order to achieve the required pressure and to prevent injury to the gums, scalers must be kept close to the end of work, the fingers being supported simultaneously on the teeth.

Scalers are not to be confused with curettes, serve subgingival ( below the gum line location ) calculus to remove necrotic cementum or inflamed tissue from the gum pocket. ( See: periodontitis)
