Periphyton

The collective term periphyton refers to the nursery of microalgae to submerged ( = below the water surface located ) surfaces, such as stone. The periphyton is an important component of freshwater and marine ecosystems and serves many protozoa and small metazoa, but also snails and insect larvae as food.
