The Perlesvaus is filled with a dark, sometimes gory atmosphere. The Ritterum the Arthurian empire is in decline, with Perlesvaus ( Perceval ) makes a considerable share of the blame, because he - put the question on the Grail failed - in Chrétien's narrative. Perlesvaus do not succeed in spite of intensive efforts, the Fisher King ( of the name Pelles bears ) to redeem: he dies before Perlesvaus reaches the Grail Castle. This he finds locked and it must take by force. He slays the 27 knights who defend the nine bridges to the palace of the castle. The Grail appears only once at the castle and then disappears on a mythical island. After a stay at the Artus Court Perlesvaus takes the afterlife journey to Gralsinsel, where he is received by 33 knights in white robes with a red cross on the chest. They announce that one day a ship would come with a red cross on a white sail to pick it up. Perlesvaus returns to the Grail back and transferred together with his mother the bodies of Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus buried there and also Perlesvaus ' sister. Finally, he takes the predicted boat trip from which he does not return. At this time, the Arthur's realm is approaching its demise.

After Perlesvaus Lancelot is the son of Alain, the youngest of the twelve sons of Glais. This had originally vowed eternal chastity before he married Yglais ( Ygloas ). One of his brothers, Josue, before Pelles was the guardian of the Grail. The linguist William A. Nitze tried Glais with glass, equated by William of Malmesbury founder of Glastonbury, who also has twelve brothers, and interpreted the entire story as a glorification of the Abbey and the Arthurian tomb reportedly found in her. Perlesvaus has five brothers, among them Bertholez li chaus ( perhaps identical with Bertolais ), and a sister, Dindran ( Danbrann, probably identical with Veronica, the mother of the Fisher King ).

The story can reach the Grail castle next Perlesvaus also Gawain and Lancelot. Gawain is to win the sword with which John the Baptist was beheaded succeed and deposits it on the Grail Castle. However, although a hermit has carefully instructed him, Gawain gets at the sight of the Grail so in rapture that he can no longer speak. Lancelot, however, may be because of his adultery with the Queen Guinevere not see the Grail. In the accoutrements of the heroes is a religious symbolism. Gawain gains a red shield with golden eagle that was once worn by Judas Maccabeus, Perlesvaus carries the blood and even a shred of the Shroud of Christ in his shield boss. Here is a spiritual closeness to the Order of Knights tangible, who considered themselves as " New Maccabees " and " soldiers of Christ " and thus as a conqueror of the secular knighthood. Completely the red cross on a white ground, which lead the Knights of the hidden Gralsinsel, refers to the habit of the Templars. But it would be wrong to read the Perlesvaus as a key novel with regard to the speculative secrets of this order (ie Baphomet ).
