Perote, Veracruz

Perote is a city in the Mexican state of Veracruz. In 2005 it had 34 658 inhabitants. It was founded in 1525 by Francisco Aguilar. The most historically significant buildings in the city is the fort built in the 18th century San Carlos. It originally served to protect the connection from Vera Cruz, the most important Mexican Atlantic port to the capital. From 1949 to 2007, it was prison and is now a museum.

Near the city rises in a national park Cofre de Perote of a 4282 -meter-high shield volcano.
