Perry Smith (politician)

Perry Smith ( born May 12, 1783 in Woodbury, Connecticut; † June 8, 1852 in New Milford, Connecticut ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party, who belonged to the United States Senate for Connecticut.

After attending secondary school, Perry Smith studied law at the Law School in Litchfield. He was admitted in 1807 to the bar and began in New Milford ( Litchfield County) to practice.

Politically, Smith operated first as a deputy in the House of Representatives from Connecticut from 1822 to 1823 From 1829 to 1837 he held the office of Postmaster of New Milford from. ; during this time he was also from 1833 to 1835 judge in a probate court. From 1835 to 1836 he sat again in the House of Representatives of the State.

1836 Perry Smith was chosen for the Democrats in the U.S. Senate, where he served from March 4, 1837 to March 3, 1843. During this time he was chairman of the Agriculture Committee ( Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry ). After retiring from the Senate, he worked again as a lawyer in New Milford, where he died in June 1852.
