Perryville is a town in Ashland County, Ohio, United States. According to the statistics of the census of 2000 the town had 816 inhabitants.

Geography

The place is situated on the Black Fork Mohican River, southwest of the village flows the river Mohican River. Perryville is the heart of Mohican Country, named after the James Fenimore Cooper described in his stories Indian tribe of the Mohicans. The name of the tribe is partly fictitious and was created by the contraction of the names of the formerly based in the New England states Mahican and Mohegan, but he characterizes the sanctuaries of the North American aborigines in central Ohio.

History

On June 10, 1815, the plans for the establishment of a community were by Thomas Coulter. Perryville So that was the first village founded in Ashland County. But the population grew only slowly, in 1830 there were only 9 neighbors. In 1860 the population had grown to 1,835.

Is named the place after the naval officer Oliver Hazard Perry, who was known by the battle on Lake Erie in 1812 during the war against the British.
