Persan (grape)

Persan is a red grape variety. It is cultivated in the French wine region Savoie. Approved it is in the departments of Savoie and Isère. In the appellation Vin de Savoie she is one of the approved secondary varieties. At low yields obtained clearly structured red wines with strong tannins. The wine should be stored almost 10 years to reach its full potential. Was Persan before the phylloxera crisis in the 19th century an important grape variety, but was later barely connect to the earlier successes. Because of the idiosyncratic nature of the wines and the susceptibility to vine diseases the area under vines of almost 200 hectares fell in 1958 to only 8 acres in 1988.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. She is white wool with a reddish hairy approach. The yellow-green young leaves are hairy spinnwebig.
  • The dark green leaves are three-lobed ( rarely five-lobed ) and weakly sinuate. The petiole is Lyen -shaped open. The blade is serrated blunt. The teeth are medium in size compared to the varieties. The leaf surface (also called lamina ) is fine bubbles coarse. In autumn the foliage changes color bright red.
  • The drum-shaped grape is small to medium in size and dichtbeerig. The pronounced elongated berries are small and of violet - black color. The aroma of juicy little berry is fairly neutral and slightly astringent.

The grape ripens about 20 days after Chasselas, and is thus in an international comparison still early maturing. Since the Persan sprouts early, the shoot tips are greatly damaged by late frost. Compared to the powdery and downy mildew, it is moderately resistant.
