Description and ecology

Appearance and leaves

Persoonia species grow as evergreen shrubs and small trees that reach heights of growth between 0.1 and 25 meters. The usually alternate and spirally or rarely opposite, sometimes with three leaves arranged in a whorl on the branches of deciduous leaves are sessile to short -stalked. The simple leaf blades are leathery or fleshy. The leaf margins are smooth. There are no stipules present.

Inflorescences and flowers

The flowers are borne singly or up to 70 on the scale-like leaves or leaf -like leaves in lateral or terminal racemose inflorescences. The hermaphroditic, flowers are four-fold radial symmetry to zygomorph. It's just a circle with four free, usually yellow to green, rare red, deformed only at their base bloom cladding available. It's just a circle with four each other free stamens present, either all fertile or is a Staminodium. Unlike the related genera staminodes are not fused with the scars. The stamens are fused with the bloom cladding, only sometimes the uppermost region free. The anthers are straight or curved back and only sometimes flattened. At the base of the carpels one or two pairs of nectar glands are present, both are the same or one of them is reduced. The gynoecium is shorter or longer than the stamens. It is only included a maximum shortly pedunculated, upper permanent carpel in each flower. Each carpel contains only one or two ovules. The stylus is bent back straight, curved to clear. Pollination is by insects ( entomophily ).

Fruit and seeds

The bare stone fruits contain mostly one, rarely two seeds. The seeds contain endosperm and the embryo just has usually two, but also a special feature sometimes up to nine ( cotyledons ). The spread of the hard seed through many different animals such as emus and kangaroo species.

Sets of chromosomes

The basic chromosome number is n = 7

Occurrence

The 95 to 100 species occur only in Australia, but there in most states. Few Persoonia species colonize the edge of the arid zone. There are only 16 species in areas with annual rainfall of less than 25 mm. 15 Of these, 16 are found in southwestern Australia and only two species, Persoonia pertinax and Persoonia Leucopogon have quite arid areas of distribution on. The greatest biodiversity has Persoonia on in the subtropics areas, in areas that are topographically and edaphic diverse. In particular Persoonia species occur on the sandy plains of southwestern Australia, in the coastal plains and the Great Dividing Range of south-eastern Australia. Some species reach the alpine zone in Tasmania and the Australian Alps, but few reach an altitude of 1500 meters.

System

The genus Persoonia 1798 was set up by James Edward Smith in Transactions of the Linnean Society of London, Volume 4, page 215. Type species is Persoonia lanceolata Andrews. There are also homonyms Persoonia Willd., It is a synonym of Carapa Aubl. ( Meliaceae ), and Persoonia Michx. , It is a synonym of Trattenikia pers. (Asteraceae). The genus name honors the Persoonia Dutch mycologist Christiaan Hendrik Persoon and botanist. Synonyms for Persoonia Sm are: linkia Cav, Pycnonia LAS. Johnson & B.G.Briggs, pentadactylon C.F.Gaertn ..

The genus belongs to the tribe Persoonia Persoonieae Rchb. , The only tribe of the subfamily Persoonideae LASJohnson & BGBriggs within the family Proteaceae.
