Pervomaisk, Luhansk Oblast

Perwomajsk (Ukrainian Первомайськ, Russian Первомайськ / Pervomaisk ) is a city of regional significance in the Luhansk Oblast in Ukraine with 37 820 inhabitants ( 2013).

Founded in 1765 as Olexandriwka, the place was called 1865-1920 Petro- Marewka. 1920 in Perwomajsk renamed (from Russian Perwoje Maja for May Day ), the place obtained in 1938 the city rights.

Geography

Geographical location

The city is located 76 km west of the Donets Basin from Oblastzentrum Luhansk and about 120 km north-east of Donetsk on the left bank of the river Luhan. Northeast of the city is the converter station of HVDC Volgograd -Donbass.

Municipality

The municipality consists of the town Perwomajsk Perwomajsk and the cities Hirske and Solote as well as the settlements of urban type Nyschnje and Toschkiwka. The municipality has a total of 70 138 inhabitants ( 2012).

According to the census in Ukraine of 2001, the population of the city is composed of the following ethnic groups:

  • Ukrainians - 65.9 %
  • Russians - 27.3 %
  • Belorussians - 1.1%
