Pestszentlőrinc

Pestszentlőrinc - Pestszentimre ( German: Sankt Lorenz Santa Emmerich ) is the name of the eighteenth arrondissement ( District XVIII ) in Budapest. The border district is mainly used as a residential area. There are some closely -built blocks of flats, but overall, detached houses are typical. It can also be found some industrial enterprises. In the area of the district is the Budapest Airport. Furthermore, there are the Meteorological Centre Országos Meteorologia Szolgálat Központi Előrejelzője and a Aeromonisches Institute ( Központi Légkörfizikai Intézet ).

History

The 18th district arose from the merger of the districts Pestszentlőrinc ( " St. Lawrence " ) and Pestszentimre ( "Santa Emmerich " ) on 1 January 1950.

The area was inhabited at the time of the Conquest. The first written mention in a document dating from the 14th century. Under Turkish rule, the area was depopulated. The new settlement began around 1700.

At the beginning of the 19th century was the brewmaster and winemaker Ferenc Mayerffy (* 1776 in Pest, † on September 7, 1845 also in Pest ) is critical to economic development. Ferihegy Airport is named after him. ( Feri is the diminutive of the first name Ferenc )

After the defeat of Napoleon, the participants of the Congress of Vienna ' 1815, the city paid a visit. On this occasion, a parade was held on the Szent Lőrinc level. The Prussian, Russian and Austrian rulers watched the parade from on today's Gilice tér from a viewing platform. In addition to this the Szent Lőrinc Chapel was built in the baroque style as early as the 1760s. Today it is one of the attractions of the district in the Margó Tivadar utca. The observation tower was destroyed in World War II.

End of the 19th century the population began to rise sharply. In the year 1909, Pestszentlőrinc separated from Kispest. The poorer inhabitants settled in the Péteri puszta while richer layers such as politicians and scientists, built themselves in the field of Lőrincz holiday homes. For example, had the politician and physicist Loránd Eötvös, the inventor Tivadar Puskás, the biologist Tivadar Margó and the Minister of Finance Menyhért Lónyay villas in this district. The name of the station in 1875 Puszta Szent Lőrinc Nyaraló on the line Cegléd -Szolnok also points to the villas. The station building is still in use today, but it is located in a structurally poor condition.

Over time, even industrial facilities were built. It was founded several brickworks and a gravel pit, and later was among others a textile factory. In 1936 was Pestszentlőrinc of county ( megyei város ), which was crucial for the further development. In the same year the National School Pestszentlőrinc ( Pestszentlőrinci Állami Gimnázium ) was founded.
