Petaluma is a city in Sonoma County in the U.S. state of California with 55,300 inhabitants ( 2004).

The geographic coordinates are: 38.24 ° N, 122.63 ° West. The metropolitan area has a size of 36.0 km ². Petaluma is found about 60 km north of San Francisco. The city was founded in 1852 by gold miners and experienced a rapid population growth. Significant industries are poultry farming ( since about 1920) and the resulting egg production.
