Pete Newell

Peter F. Newell ( born August 3, 1915 in Vancouver, British Columbia, † 17 November, 2008 Rancho Santa Fe, California) was a Canadian basketball coach.

Career

He coached 1946-1960 the teams from three universities: University of San Francisco ( 1946-50 ), Michigan State University ( 1950-54 ) and University of California, Berkeley ( 1954-60 ). With the University of San Francisco Newell won the 1949 National Invitation Tournament. The team from the University of California, he led the 1959 and 1960 NCAA Finals, where in 1959 the title succeeded. 1960 Newell coached the U.S. national team at the Olympic Games in Rome ( with players like Oscar Robertson and Jerry West), who won gold sovereign. Pete Newell is one of only three basketball coaches who have won titles in each of the three aforementioned tournaments.

After his coaching career with a record of 234-123 Newell " Athletic Director" was at Cal - Berkley. From 1968 to 1972 he was general manager of the Houston Rockets, 1972-1976 GM of the Los Angeles Lakers. Subsequently, he was a talent scout for the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers. On April 30, 1979, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and September 22, 2009 posthumously inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame.
