Peter Benoit

Peter Leonardus Benoit ( born August 17, 1834 in Harelbeke, † March 8, 1901 in Antwerp) was a Belgian composer.

Life

Peter Benoit graduated from 1851 to 1855 to study music at the Conservatory of Brussels and worked from then on as a conductor ( Park Theatre) and composer, particularly of stage works and cantatas. In 1857 he was awarded the Prix de Rome for his cantata Le excellent Meurtre d' Abel. From 1858 he stayed for some time in Germany (Cologne, Bonn, Leipzig, Dresden, Berlin, Munich). 1861 he was appointed the orchestra conductor at the Théâtre des Bouffes Parisiens. In 1867 he was appointed director of the Flemish school of music ( Vlaamsche Muziekschool ) Antwerp, 1898 the rank of State Conservatory and was henceforth called Royal Conservatory.

Although Benoit mentioned in Pour Don Carlos Masons and the Grand Orient de France, but was not itself a Freemason.

He is buried in the cemetery Schoonselhof in Antwerp.
