Peter Beyer

Peter Beyer ( born May 9, 1952 in Hannover ) is a German biologist and since 2002 Professor of Cell Biology ( Department of Biology II) at the Albert- Ludwigs- University of Freiburg. Beyer attracted worldwide attention as a co-inventor of Golden Rice, together with Ingo Potrykus of the ETH Zurich. Golden Rice is a genetically modified rice, the beta -carotene in the endosperm - the edible portion of the rice grain - accumulates.

Life

After school and school-leaving examination in Hanover, studied Peter Beyer 1971-1977 biology (biochemistry, cell biology, microbiology, Macromolecular Chemistry ) at the Universities of Marburg and Freiburg. In 1981 he completed his studies with a doctorate in cell biology. From 1982 to 1990 he was assistant professor at the University of Freiburg, and in 2000 he completed his habilitation thesis, which he received the venia legendi.

Peter Beyer is a professor at Cell Biology Institute ( Biology II ) of the Centre for Applied Biosciences (ZAB ), University of Freiburg, where he leads a research group in the field of prenyl lipid metabolism in addition to his teaching, with an emphasis on the applied aspect of increasing the nutritional value of crops in developing countries.

Peter Beyer is a member of the Golden Rice Humanitarian Board, whose main goal is to introduce Golden Rice in target countries such as India, Philippines, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Nepal since 2001. Since 2003 he is member of the HarvestPlus consortium ( Section Nutritional Genomics ) and since 2005 the project ProVitaMinRice consortium, part of the Grand Challenges in Global Health program of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In 2002 he received the ProEuropa, Science Culture Award (Berlin).

Since 2006, Beyer directs the ProVitaMinRice consortium, which is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as part of the Grand Challenges in Global Health Initiative. The international consortium working on a project entitled Engineering Rice for High Beta-Carotene, Vitamin E and Enhanced Iron and Zinc Bioavailability, whose aim is to enrich Golden Rice with other vital micronutrients. The first phase of the project runs from 2005 to 2010 and was rewarded with $ 11.3 million. Other members of the consortium are the Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, Texas), Michigan State University ( East Lansing, Michigan), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (China), the Cuu Long Delta Rice Research Institute (Vietnam ), the International Rice Research Institute IRRI (Philippines ) and the Philippine rice Research Institute PhilRice.

2006 Beyer was by the readers of the scientific journal Nature Biotechnology, together with Ingo Potrykus, the 10-year anniversary of the magazine, voted one of the world's most respected personalities in the fields of agricultural, environmental and industrial biotechnology.
