Peter Burke (historian)

Peter Burke ( born 1937 in Stanmore, England ) is a British historian.

Life

Peter Burke was born as the son of an Irish Catholic father and a Jewish mother of Polish and Lithuanian descent and attended until the age of 17, a Jesuit school in North London. He then studied at St John 's College, Oxford. He taught at the School of European Studies at the University of Sussex. Since 1978 he has been Professor of Cultural History at the University of Cambridge. His research focus is the Renaissance in general and their social history in particular. Another focus his work on historiography, particularly for Annales school. In his probably most famous essay with the programmatic title Did Europe Exist Before 1700? Burke advocated the thesis that European awareness have emerged only in the 18th century. Peter Burke in 2003 had held the Heidelberger Gadamer professorship. Burke is married to the Brazilian historian Maria Lúcia Garcia Pallares -Burke.
