Peter Cartwright (revivalist)

Peter Cartwright ( born September 1, 1785 Amherst County, Virginia; † September 25, 1872 in Pleasant Plains, Sangamon County, Illinois) was an early American " hellfire and brimstone, " preacher and missionary, to the Second Great Awakening Start helped personally and twelve thousand people baptized.

At the age of 16, he had an awakening experience. He turned to the Methodist Episcopal Church and became a preacher and District riders. 1812 he participated in the British -American War. In the same year he ( District Superintendent today ) became the Presiding Elder in 1812 called, which office he held for fifty years. In 1846 he was defeated as a candidate for a seat for the state of Illinois in the U.S. Congress Abraham Lincoln. He was married in 1808 to Frances Gaines, by whom he had two sons and seven daughters. Death is said to have overtaken him on horseback. He was buried in his hometown of Pleasant Plains, Illinois.
