Peter Constantine

Peter Constantine ( born 1963 in London) is a translator and author. His translations include literary works from German, Russian, French, Old and Modern Greek, from Italian, Albanian, Dutch and Slovenian.

Life

His mother came from Austria, while his father was a Brit Turkish- Greek origin. First, Constantine grew up in Athens, before moving to the United States. His first book, Japanese Street Slang appeared in 1992 in the Random House Publishing Group.

In the early 1990s he began, stories and poetry to translate from various European languages. These translations have been published in literary magazines from the U.S. and from the UK and Australia. His first translation into novel-length was Six Early Stories by Thomas Mann. Excerpts of which were published in the New York Times.

Since then he has worked almost exclusively as a literary translator. He translated among others Hannah Arendt, Bernhard Schlink, Anton Chekhov, Nikolai Gogol, Leo Tolstoy, Voltaire and Machiavelli.

Awards

  • PEN / Book-of - the-Month Club Translation Prize for Six Early Stories translation of Thomas Mann ( 1998); The book was selected by the New York Times Notable Book of the Year.
  • National Translation Award for Thirty -Eight New Stories ( 1999).
  • 2002 was Constantine's translation of the complete works of Isaac Babel ( Nathalie Babel edited by ) a recognition by the Koret Jewish Book Award and the National Jewish Book Award.
  • His translation of the book of poems Mother of the modern Greek poet Stylianos Harkianakis received 2004/2005 the Literature Prize of the Hellenic Association of Translators.
  • 2007 Constantine was the recipient of the Helen and Kurt Wolff Translation Prize for his translation of Benjamin Lebert 's novel The Bird is a Raven.
  • His translation of the basic writings of Machiavelli was a finalist for the 2008 PEN / Book-of - the-Month Club Translation Prize.
  • Peter Constantine was awarded the Ellen Maria Gorrissen Berlin Prize in 2012 the American Academy in Berlin.
