Peter Dawes

Peter Spencer Dawes ( born February 5, 1928) is a British Anglican theologian. He was from 1988 to 1995 Bishop of Derby in the Church of England.

Dawes attended Aldenham School in Hertfordshire and studied at Hatfield College, University of Durham. 1955 was his ordination. His priestly career began as a vicar ( Curate ) on the St Andrew 's Church in the district of Whitehall Park in London and St Ebbe 's Church in Oxford. Subsequently, he was a tutor at Clifton Theological College and pastor (Vicar ) at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Romford. From 1980 to 1988 he was Archdeacon ( Archdeacon ) of West Ham. In 1988 he was ordained a bishop. In 1988, he was, as the successor of Cyril Bowles, Bishop of Derby. In 1995, he went into retirement. His successor as Bishop of Derby was Jonathan Bailey. After his retirement, he was appointed auxiliary bishop in 1995 for volunteers ( Honorary Assistant Bishop) in the Diocese of Ely.

Dawes was director ( director ) of the Derby Diocesan Board of Finance (May 1991 July 1995 ) and at Trinity College, Bristol ( June 1991 - November 1996). He belonged to the evangelical wing of the Church of England.

Dawes was a member of the Electoral Reform Society (ERS ). As part of the suffrage referendum in the UK in May 2011 Dawes belonged together with the bishops Alan Smith (St Albans ), John Packer ( Ripon and Leeds ), Michael Langrish (Exeter), Martyn Jarrett ( Beverley ), Nigel Stock (St Edmundsbury and Ipswich ), Alan Wilson ( Buckingham ), Michael Perham ( Gloucester), Colin Buchanan (former Bishop of Woolwich ) and David Atkinson (former Bishop of Thetford ) to the proponents of a ranking suffrage.
