Peter Emil Becker

Peter Emil Becker ( born November 23, 1908 in Hamburg; † 7 October 2000 in Göttingen ) was a German neurologist, psychiatrist and geneticist. According to him, the Muscular Dystrophy Becker- Kiener is named, which he discovered in the postwar years, and which he published in 1957.

Biography

Becker was born on 23 November 1908 in Hamburg. He studied medicine in Marburg, Berlin, Munich, Vienna and Hamburg, and approved in 1933. Upon his residency training in neurology and psychiatry, he was from 1936 to 1938 assistant to Fritz Lenz at Berlin's Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Anthropology and Eugenics. He then worked in the hereditary biological department of the University Psychiatric Hospital Freiburg im Breisgau in field muscular dystrophy.

Becker married in 1937 rose spiral, from the marriage were six children were born.

Becker was a member of the SA, in which it was in 1934 Oberscharführer. In 1940 he joined the NSDAP. In 1942 he was drafted into the Air Force doctor. From 1943 until the war ended in 1945 he was again staff and lecturer at the University Psychiatric Hospital Freiburg im Breisgau; to 1956 he practiced as a neurologist in Tuttlingen and taught next to the University of Freiburg. In 1951 he was appointed there as an adjunct professor.

In 1957 he accepted an appointment as professor of the Extraordinary Chair of Human Genetics at the Georg- August -Universität Göttingen, 1962 was upgraded to an Institute. Becker led this Institute of Human Genetics until his retirement in 1975., Where he worked in succession by Fritz Lenz, with whom he already worked in his time at Berlin's Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Anthropology and Eugenics. In the years 1970 and 1971 he was chairman of the Society for Anthropology and Human Genetics.

Importance

Becker was (1964 ) involved (since 1976 in Human Genetics renamed) and instrumental in building the German Society of Human Genetics co-founder and co-editor of the journal Human Genetics. In 1988 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Ulm.

According to him, in Göttingen, awarded annually since 1998, Peter Emil Becker Award is named for outstanding achievements in the field of Pediatric Neurology.
