Peter Feldmann

Peter Feldmann ( born October 7, 1958 in Helmstedt ) is a German politician (SPD) and since July 1, 2012 Lord Mayor of the City of Frankfurt am Main. He was elected on 25 March 2012, a clear majority in the post and came over from Petra Roth ( CDU), who held the post since 1995.

Life

Peter Feldmann attended from 1970 in Frankfurt Ziehenschule 1979 and put his Abitur at the Ernst- Reuter-Schule from. 1979 and 1980 was followed by a stay abroad in Israel, he joined with a gardener training. He then studied political science at the University of Marburg, a study, graduating in 1986 with a diploma. In 2009 he finished also trained as a social business administration.

Peter Feldmann expects to liberal Judaism. He has a daughter who was born in 2009 with his partner.

Activities

By 1988 Peter Feldmann worked as a lecturer. In 1988 he was secretary of the SPD youth organization related SJD - Die Falken in Rhineland- Palatinate, and then he led six years the training and youth center in Frankfurt- Bonames that the skills of disadvantaged young people dedicated to. In 1996 he moved as a policy consultant to the Joint Welfare Association. Since 2008 he worked as Head of the senior care center Kurt Stone Breaker House in Darmstadt- Eberstadt.

Political Work

Political commitment

In 1967, Peter Feldmann of Socialist Youth, the Young Socialists in 1974 and the SPD in. In 1981 he was elected student council chairman at the Philipps- University Marburg and in the same year as Deputy Young Socialist state chairman. 1987-1989 he was Chairman of Young Socialists in Frankfurt am Main. In 1988 he was elected to the city council of Frankfurt am Main and in 1990 spokesperson for Youth and Social Affairs of the SPD. He was elected to the Group Executive Board and 2004 as Deputy Group Chairman of the SPD in 1993. From 2001 up to the local elections in 2011, he was also Chairman of the main and Finance Committee of the City Council. At the same time he was a member of the Committee on Health and Welfare.

Peter Feldmann founded with Sergey Lagodinsky 2007 the SPD internal working group of Jewish Social Democrats. The AJS is the first institutional organization of Jews in Germany in a party since 1933. Peter Feldmann sat in the working group focused on a Jewish perspective in the SPD on foreign and domestic issues such as the Middle East conflict, right-wing, integration and dealing with the past one. Following the resignation Lagodinskys, due to the failed Thilo Sarrazin's favor party planning procedure, Feldmann was the sole spokesman of the AJS.

Lord Mayor of Frankfurt am Main

In 2011, he competed as a candidate of his party for the mayor election in March 2012 in Frankfurt am Main. Against his intra-party rivals Michael Paris he won in a membership referendum with 53.76 percent of the candidacy. In the first round of the election for mayor on March 11, 2012, he reached the second place with 33.0 percent for the CDU candidate Boris Rhein ( 39.1 percent). In the second ballot on 25 March 2012, he won with 57.4 percent of the vote clearly against the Rhine, which came to 42.6 percent. The turnout was 35.1 percent.

At Feldmann's political core issues in the campaign included the limitation of aircraft noise, the education, the situation of older people in the city, the construction of affordable housing, the internationality of the City of Frankfurt and the fight against child poverty. Here he has the ambitious goal of halving child poverty in Frankfurt during his tenure. He also wants to prevent the sale of Nassauische homestead.

He announced after his election that he would take over the business department from the current department heads Markus Frank ( CDU).

Peter Feldmann is since the election victory of the Nazis on March 12, 1933 and the expulsion of Ludwig Landmann the first Lord Mayor of Frankfurt with a Jewish background.

Controversies

Some time after he took office showed tensions between the black-green Municipal guided on the one hand and the social democratic mayor on the other.
