Peter George Peterson

Peter George Peterson ( born June 5, 1926 in Kearney, Nebraska ) is a former American professional managers and politicians.

Life

Peterson was born as the son of Greek immigrants in the United States. He therefore has both the Greek and the American citizen. After attending the High School of Kearney, he studied from 1942 to 1947 at Northwestern University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree summa cum laude. He then completed a post -graduate degree in Business Administration from the University of Chicago, which he finished in 1951 with a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

In the following years he worked for several companies before he at Bell & Howell Vice President and in 1961 became president in 1958. Subsequently, he was 1963-1971 with its chairman and chief executive officer (CEO). From 1971 to 1972 he was an assistant to U.S. President Richard Nixon for International Economic Affairs.

February 29, 1972 Peterson was appointed by Nixon as Trade Minister ( Secretary of Commerce ) in his cabinet; but this he was only barely a year until February 1, 1973.

Then he left the government policy and returned to the private sector, where he was CEO of Lehman Brothers from 1973 to 1977 and Chairman of the Board from 1973 to 1984. In addition, he was a board member of 3M, Black & Decker, CITGO, The Continental Group, Federated Department Stores ( FDS ), General Foods, Radio Corporation of America (RCA ) and Sony. In 1985 he founded together with Stephen A. Schwarzman, the investment company Blackstone Group, whose senior he was Chairman until 2008. At the same time, he was from 2000 to 2004 Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Peterson was also socially and socio- political activities and in particular from 1985 to 2007 Chairman of the Council on Foreign Relations. He was also curator ( trustee ) of the Committee for Economic Development, Board Member of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, the founding president of the Institute for International Economics (IIE ), a board member of the National Bureau of Economic Research, curator of the Museum of Modern Art as well as a board member of the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation. Today he is one with a billion-dollar fortune of the richest Greeks.
