Peter Hayman

Peter Hayman ( born February 17, 1930 in Uxbridge, Middlesex ) is a British ornithologist and wildlife illustrator.

Life and work

After his education at the Taunton School Hayman studied architecture. He then worked for several years as an architect in London. Influenced by Archibald Thorburn and John Gerrard Keulemans 1969, he was an artist. His main interest was the British avifauna, which he often represented in watercolors and gouache in flight profile. Appeared in 1976 in the British publisher Mitchell Beazley the authored by Philip John Kennedy Burton 's book The Birdlife of Britain with the first watercolors by Hayman. In the 1980s, Hayman was involved in the Helm Identification Guides, a series of bird field guides. In 1991 he published the book The Complete Guide to the Birdlife of Britain & Europe. This richly illustrated book with 3,500 watercolors created in collaboration with Rob Hume. It was in several languages, including on German under the title The Birds of Europe, translated, and is a popular bird guides in Europe. Between 1989 and 1995 Hayman was specialized in landscape painting.
