Peter Hermes

Peter Hermes ( born August 8, 1922 in Berlin ) is a German diplomat. He also served as Secretary of State in the Foreign Office. He is the son of the Centre and later the CDU politician and Reich Minister of Agriculture Andreas Hermes.

Life

Hermes 1941 soldier, came in 1944 in a penal battalion for participation in the resistance of his father and became 1945 in Soviet captivity. After the war, his father Andreas Hermes was beset as founding Chairman of the CDU in the Soviet occupation zone with the possibility of dismissal of the Son by the Soviets to lead the CDU to the political line of the so-called block parties. Since Andreas Hermes this pressure the Soviets did not want to bow down and moved to the West, remained his son Peter Hermes to 1950 in Soviet captivity.

Since 1953, Hermes was commissioner for trade negotiations at the Foreign Office, Head of the Department for External Economic and development policy and European economic integration.

After completing a doctorate degree in law Peter Hermes came in 1955 in the Diplomatic Service a. There he eventually became Secretary of State in the Foreign Office (1975-1979) and thereafter Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Washington. There he was the organizer of the 1982 Berlin Airlift, William H. Tunner, with the Great Federal Cross of Merit with Star from. His diplomatic career, he eventually finished by August 1984 to 1987 as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Holy See.

After retirement he became a member of the Commission for Contemporary History Association and vice chairman of the Society of the German Archaeological Institute - Theodor Wiegand society. Peter Hermes is an honorary member of the German Archaeological Institute.
