Peter II of Sicily

Peter II of Sicily (* 1305, † August 1342 in Calascibetta ) was from 1337 to 1342 King of Sicily.

Peter was the eldest son of King Frederick II and Elizabeth of Anjou, a daughter of King Charles II of Naples. He was vicar general in 1312 and 1321 crowned in violation of the peace of Caltabellotta and appointed co-regent of his father. Peter commanded in 1328 the Sicilian fleet that supported the Ludwig of Bavaria. After the death of his father, in 1337, he succeeded as King of Sicily. He was under the influence of his mother and his wife Elisabeth of Carinthia. His reign was characterized by economic and foreign policy problems. Inside, the brothers and Matteo Damiani Palizzi, minions of the Queen, great influence, to 1340 Peters brother John took over the Vicariate and forced into exile won. The investiture of Pope Benedict XII was Peters. not recognized. The Angevin rulers of Naples succeeded Lipari ( 1339 ) and Milazzo ( 1342 ) to be filled. After the unexpected death of Peter II, in 1342, was succeeded by his underage son Ludwig, who was under the tutelage of Peter's brother Johann.

Family

Peter married on April 23, 1323 Elisabeth of Carinthia, a daughter of Duke Otto III. of Carinthia. They had nine children.
