Peter III of Portugal
Peter III. (Portuguese Dom Pedro Clemente Francisco José António de Bragança ) (* July 5, 1717, † May 25 1786 ) was King of Portugal from the house of Braganza.
Life
Peter III. was the fourth son of John V of Portugal and his wife Maria Anna of Austria. As a younger son he was not actually intended for the throne, and so ascended after the death of his father in 1750 and initially his older brother Joseph I to the Portuguese throne.
Joseph I, however, had no male heir. Therefore, the king had a choice, either to allow female succession in favor of his daughter Maria, or his younger brother, Peter, was appointed as the next in the male line of succession. The dilemma was solved by Peter in 1760 married his niece Maria. After the death of Joseph in 1777 both climbed together to the Portuguese throne. The governance gave Peter a large extent his wife, who always deselect made a series of anti-clerical reforms that were carried out during the reign of Joseph I of the First Minister, the Marquis of Pombal.
