Peter Johann Nepomuk Geiger

Johann Nepomuk Geiger ( born January 11, 1805 in Vienna, † October 29, 1880 ) was an Austrian painter and draftsman.

Life

Geiger was born into a family of sculptors and initially intended to devote himself to the same subject, but soon found in drawing and painting his territory. His illustrations of Anton Ziegler's " Patriotic immortelles " (1841 ) established his reputation. Until 1848 was followed by a large number of other illustrations of historical and poetic works, but in addition also several oil paintings for members of the imperial house.

He accompanied 1850 Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria on his journey to the Orient and unfolded after his return a very fruitful activity. In 1853 he became a professor at the Art Academy in his hometown. For the Court Geiger created several works; inter alia, he made for Archduke Ferdinand Max a cycle of illustrations from the works of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Schiller and William Shakespeare, and for Archduke Karl Ludwig of Austria several genre pictures from the oriental way of life.
